Behavioural research is key to tackling societal challenges; however, working on societal challenges can also bring researchers into contact with topics and content that can be distressing. In 2023-4, Centre-UB conducted a scoping review of behavioural research training needs and we heard from more than 200 government, public and private sector organisations, PhD students and fellows. One of the most pressing needs was training in how to protect your wellbeing when exposed to distressing topics and content. During 2024-5, the Centre-UB team collaborated with subject matter experts and experts-by-experience to produce a continuing professional development course to meet this need.
The course is hosted on the FutureLearn platform and is available for enrollment now and on a continuous basis. The course fee is £100 + VAT and individual researchers can enrol direct with FutureLearn through the site. Alternatively, organisations who employ staff for whom exposure to distressing topics and content is part of their role, can bulk purchase seats on the course at a reduced rate.
