There’s a clue in the name. The term “infant” comes from the Latin ”in fans” meaning “without speech”. Babies’ inability to speak to us about their experiences presents a fundamental challenge to understanding early human development. I will talk about a number of methods of studying infant behaviour to provide clues to understanding early human development and experience, drawing out both limitations and frontier opportunities in this domain of research.
