Fellow: Dr. Eleanor Craig; Partner: National Police Chiefs’ Council; School: School of Psychology.

My fellowship focuses on developing training materials for police trainers, aiming to enhance mental health and well-being support for police personnel. The key objectives of my research include creating comprehensive training resources to equip police trainers with the knowledge and tools to recognise and respond to psychological distress, raising awareness of mental health challenges among police staff, and strengthening resilience by offering practical strategies to manage distressing situations effectively.
So far, I have identified 73 well-being interventions designed for police personnel. These interventions have been analysed based on their suitability for staff, their preventative versus response-based approaches, and their categorization into nine key themes: communication, environmental change, mental health, physical well-being, resilience, structural change, support, training and education, and work-life balance.
Now in the second phase of the fellowship, I’m evaluating which interventions will be most effective for inclusion in the “Training the Trainers” materials, ensuring police trainers are equipped to support the well-being of their teams effectively.
